It's hard making games. More specifically, it's hard to finish making a game. It's always fun making the core of the game and getting all the interesting parts working, but it's that last 10% that takes 90% of the time. The reason is usually a lack of incentive to get over the line - after all, it's not like it's a job!

These games have been designed to accept keyboard input, as they were always intended to be added to arcade cabinets. Whilst it's true that not everyone has a cabinet handy, you can use a program called JoyToKey to map your joystick onto key bindings.
I used to run a Web Server which hosted the online facility, but had to shut it down when it become too expensive to maintain. I plan to provide a new, lightweight solution soon, which will require an updated version of the games to work.
Mechatron is quite old now (2008) and was written for older hardware and Windows 7. It now ships with a suitable version of the Direct Draw API, which keeps it working and you should enable all of the compatibility options in the game shortcut/startup.
